Taking Spring Into My Own Hands

May 18, 2011 at 5:12 am | Posted in accessories | 1 Comment

This last weekend I was excited to leave for our first camping trip of the year.  We went to the Indiana Dunes with my mother-in-law, my daughter’s aunt/godmother and my daughter.  For those of you that don’t know our camping is a bit different then most people’s idea of camping.  We stay in a air-conditioned/heated RV, which happened to be upgraded this year to a really big air-conditioned/heated, flat screen tv RV.  We don’t do much hiking and we definitely don’t rough it.  We read alot of magazines, books, watch tons of movies and talk around the campfire for as long as possible and truth be told we venture out and do a little shopping and perhaps go out to dinner a time or two!  We call it girly camping!

This weekend was a bust besides the fun company.  When Sloan and I left Indianapolis it was 86 degrees outside and by the time we made it to northern Indiana it was down to 54 degrees and it had started raining and it never stopped raining.  Oh, and when I say raining I mean a steady downpour rain.  We were bummed we didn’t get to sit outside but really it didn’t stop us from having fun…well that was until I stopped the fun.

I’ll be honest I’ve suffered from a little morning (all day) sickness for a few weeks now but it really hasn’t been too horrible and it wasn’t everyday and it would happen once and I’d feel better.  That wasn’t the case on Sunday though, I woke up with a bit of a migraine and a few hours later I proceeded to get sick, over and over and over again.  Without grossing you out too much lets just say I couldn’t stop getting sick and it got so bad my mother-in-law convinced me to call my doctor who advised me to head on over to the ER to be checked out.  So I spent all day Sunday at the hospital and was diagnosed with severe morning sickness and was given some medication to help.  Luckily I got to hear baby beans heartbeat and it was a strong 145 and by Monday afternoon I was feeling much better.  Now, I just feel bad for grossing my family out so bad!!

So now that I’m done whining about being sick I can whine about the weather.  I don’t think we’ve had more then 4 nice days this entire year, so I’m taking matters into my own hands and making the house feel a bit more like spring.

So for the rest of the week I’ll post photos of the small things I’ve done around the house to make it ready for what I hope is spring at least for a few weeks before we head right into summer.

For now I’ll give you a few tips you can try at your house that are quick, easy and cheap to brighten it up for the season.

1.  New pillows for your bed or couch.  Simple and easy to get rid of your heavy winter pillows for pretty spring pillows.

2.  New placemats for your dining room table.

3.  Replace a piece of upholstered furniture with a piece of wicker furniture.  This type of furniture is light and airy and perfect for the warmer months.

(Coastal Living)

4.  Remove heavy carpets and replace with scatter or sisal rugs or no rug at all.

(Import Flooring)

5.  Remove some of you knickknacks and replace with something large like a piece of coral.

6.  Remove your heavy curtains and replace with something lighter or again, nothing at all.

7.  Pack up that heavy wool afghan and if you need a blanket replace with a light cotton one.

8.  Place herbs on your kitchen window sill.

9.  Place some white daisies on your side table.

10. Replace your colored candles with white candles.

(Happy to Design)

11.  De-clutter and clean.  They don’t call it spring cleaning for nothing!!

12.  Replace that bowl of pinecones and  fill it with lemons or limes.

Putzing Around and Some Bad Kharma

There’s been no big projects this week.  Ok, that’s a lie, our laundry room cabinets were installed but I don’t count that because I was just the foreman.  I’ve been trying to catch up around the house with the million little projects I’ve got going on.  I hung some blinds (for the love of God, I hate installing blinds more then anything) I’ve cleaned the house (am I the only person’s house that gets trashed during a room remodel) hung some prints, did some laundry, you know boring stuff.  Oh and after watching Hoarders last night, I cleaned my house some more!  I have this underlying fear that my house will end up like one of theirs, which is funny because I’m pretty much the opposite of a hoarder!

My office is moving at a very slow pace because of other projects but last night as I was filling out permission slips and working on my calender and finishing up some moodboards for some gals,  I decided my inspiration boards needed a little punch.

(Photo taken at night, sorry, that’s the breaks of spur of the moment ideas)

All I did was add some upholstery tacks to the perimeter of the boards.  Quick and easy!  Back to one of my design rules, do a little at a time, the small things add up!

I’m also working on a little art project for the main level bathroom and I needed a frame.  At first I picked up a frame at Hobby Lobby but I caught myself.  (Good thing it took the lady 20 minutes to get to the fabric area to help me, oh and then she’s mad at me because how dare I ring the service bell twice!) I put the frame back and thought I’d run to the Goodwill to see if they would have a frame.  I was looking for a wood one that was a little worn, perfect place to look!

I found the frame below for $2.99.  Way better then $19.99 right!?  At first I wasn’t quite sure what was in the frame and I turned it over and it said Jacob, Age 4, Dolphin.

Ummm that can’t be good kharma giving your babies artwork to Goodwill can it!?  Honestly, it was hard for me to throw out the artwork to put my art work in!!  I’ll show you what I did with the frame tomorrow!!

One of my favorite things about decorating is doing vignettes, I think its the easiest way to do a quick change to a space and usually it takes virtually no money.  Vignettes are what makes a house a home.

I thought it would be fun to start sharing with you some of these small spaces in my home.  I’ll also put a photo on the left side of the blog listed vignettes, so they will all be in one place.

I’ll be launching a whole new look at House to your Home on July 1st!  I know it seems like a long time away but honestly if you had any idea how slow things move!  I’m happy to say I get busier each day and have a few new things in the works to share with you so stay tuned!  If there is anything you’d like to see more of or less of please let me know!  I really love hearing from all of you!!

Using Malachite in Interior Design

March 3, 2011 at 11:07 pm | Posted in accessories, interior design | 3 Comments

Malachite is a very popular semi-precious stone. It is named for the Greek word “mallow” which is a green herb. Its banded light and dark green designs are one-of-a-kind, and give it a unique ornamental quality unlike that of any other stone. The light and dark green bands are so distinctive that malachite maybe one of the most easily recognized minerals by the general public. A popular design of ceramic ware which imitates this banding is named after the mineral malachite. It forms the banding from subtle changes in the oxidation states of the surrounding pore waters, but the exact mechanism is still not well understood.

So that’s the definition of malachite, below are some examples of using this stone in your home. All I know, is I want some malachite somewhere in my house! So beautiful!!

Oh and I’m totally aware that my design style is all over the place! Is there anything I don’t love!?

Dear Winter,

Don’t Rule Out the Unexpected

February 4, 2011 at 4:07 am | Posted in accessories | 4 Comments

It’s funny I can easily shop at a thrift store or Goodwill and Target but then I get snobby about certain stores and have my mind set of what sorts of things they have.

For example Big Lots, when I think of Big Lots I think of this.

A lazy boy is my idea of designer hell but a baby lazy boy, it’s like your teaching your kids they don’t even have a chance!! (:

I stoppped at Big Lots a few weeks ago because I was wasting some time while my daughter was at cheerleading and to my surprise look what I found!

So don’t be like me, don’t be a design snob, there’s great things to be found all over the place!

Anyone else have a favorite (secret) store they’ve found some great things at??

New Year Goals

Sloan is still on break this week so it’s been a bit hard to get into the full swing of the blog this week.  Today, I’ll be supervising her making sure she gets her 2 tons of laundry and her room cleaned up.

I don’t really do the New Year’s Resolution thing but I do re-examine my goals from time to time and a new year of course is a great time to think about things once again.

One goal applies to what I first talked about when it comes to Sloan and her chores, I think this is the year mom needs to take a step back and let Sloan take a little more responsibility when it comes to taking care of herself.  Of course that means I should probably get my husband on this bandwagon too!!  (I need to let go of me being the only person who can do it right!)

On a personal front the goal is to get my skin under control.  As most of you know I was pregnant a few years ago and with that I was blessed with rosacea and since that time I’ve tried a million products to help get it under control.  I recently went online and did a skin care analysis with Mario Badescu and the other day I got my free samples.  Seriously the first time I used it I could see and feel the difference.  It was the first time in months that my skin didn’t burn after applying my product.  We’ll see how it goes but I am totally goingt to be ordering their products.  Does anyone else use Mario Badescu and if so can you tell me your experience?

A professional and personal goal is to finish up school and get my interior design degree by next year, which means I’ll have to suck it up and take summer classes.

When it comes to House to your Home and Laurie Jones Designs there are many goals.  Last year I tried to get a space at Midland Antiques to sell my furniture but unfortunately a booth space hasn’t opened up yet.  I thought while I waited for a space I would sell my furniture at a few farmer markets this summer and possibly have a small sale in my backyard for invited guest.  Another goal is to get my Etsy shop up and running.  I get alot of emails asking where I get some of my accessories for my home so I thought I’d start selling the unique items I find on my shopping excursions!

The blog look will be changing again soon, it will reflect a bit more of who I really am and my design philosophy.

I was blessed with a really great 2010 and knock on wood 2011 will be even better!

(No pictures today so I hope I didn’t lose any of you!!)

Quick and Easy

This is a quick and easy makeover with what else but paint!

I picked up this mirror at Midland Antiques awhile back and wasn’t sure where I’d put it but I love the lines and it was a heavy and so nicely made.

I decided to put it in my dining room above my sideboard so I painted it black and then added a little gold to make it pop.

I had to buy a heavy duty screw to hang it and luckily it worked.  Here’s the finished product above my sideboard.

I Heart Mirrors

I do! I do! I do!  I love using mirrors to decorate a space!  Here’s the latest mirror decorating down our stairs leading to our newly finished basement remodel!

The mirrors and shelf are from Target and the candleholder is from Pottery Barn.  I think I’m going to paint or wallpaper this wall to make it pop out more but I’m in the middle of a major painting project in our master bedroom so it’ll have to go on the list of things to do!
