The Fireplace Reveal!!

The fireplace was the most excited I have gotten over all the projects we’ve worked on since we moved into our house last year, it was also the one I couldn’t wait to finish!  I’ve talked about it before but the previous owners sorta have me perplexed, they spent lots of money on certain things (the appliances, thank you) and spent virtually nothing on other things (the fireplace and masterbath).  I think this was the reason some people were put off by the house because of the things that weren’t finished but as an interior designer I liked it because it meant I could do whatever I wanted!  (well…almost!)

Here is how the fireplace started.

Not even a cheesy mantel a total blank slate.

 

I’m not quite sure if I have a specific style, I really appreciate everything but I think my direction with this house and the others I’ve done is that I let the house tell me what it wants.  I know that sounds crazy, but I think design happens over time and I think a house gives off a feeling. My house is new but it’s not cookie cutter and I wanted the fireplace to look both polished and  rock and rock and roll.  I wanted the elements of smooth and rough to play together.

Here is a rough (very rough) sketch of what I had in mind.

 

 

 

The boxes have been framed and the paneling started and the mesh attached to make a good bond with the stone.

 

(The stone applied and set over night and the inner part of the mantle installed)

 

(The trim has been attached around the window seats and upper part of the paneling, this matches the trim throughout the house.)

 

Here is the finished but undressed fireplace.  I think our contractor did an excellent job!!

 

From this point I got to take over and decorate the wall and fireplace.  I wanted to warm it up and be different so I chose to use both symmetrical (the lamps) and asymmetrical (the middle vignette) design when putting it together.  Ready for the reveal?

 

 

The blinds bring more texture to the space and makes it feel more cozy and that’s always what I am aiming for when designing a space.  I’d like to have some cushions made for the window seats but I need to find just the right fabric before that happens.  (Never rush design!)

So that’s the fireplace, it took almost a year to get finished but it was well worth the wait!!
