Following My Own Design Rules

My #1 rule is to use what you love, I’ve probably said it a hundred times right?  It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t get 5 stars on Rate  My Space and it doesn’t matter if you don’t get 100 comments on your blog, I guarantee if you use something in your design that reminds you of someone you love or has a special memory it will never go out of style and you will never get sick of it.

My daughter, Sloan went to her first formal dance last week.  She’s in 7th grade and growing up way too quickly!  Her Ya Ya (grandma) not only helped but bought Sloan her first dress.  She also came to stay with us for the weekend so she could be there to help get her ready.  (Yea, I know best Ya Ya ever!)

Sloan is becoming quite the fashionista and it’s alot of fun to watch her have fun with clothes.  She’s says she wants to be a stylist when she grows up! She’s recently discovered vintage clothing so when we were looking for a coat to go with her dress she immediately knew what she wanted.  We ended up purchasing a vintage fur from an antique store in a great area in Indianapolis called Fountain Square.

Here is a group shot of Sloan and her best friends, honestly I feel like I’m the luckiest mom in the world because all these girls are the absolute best!

Sloan is not quite sure what to do with her dress now that the dance is over.  I think she’s thinking of keeping it for a little while just so she can look at it, (: but in time I think she might sell it and buy her next piece of vintage clothing!

The fur is not being sold though and instead of being thrown in the closet I found a better solution for it.  I have a mannequin in my office that I used as a bulletin board but was looking to use it for something else because I have two bulletin boards on the wall.

Below is the before picture.  It’s also to prove to some of you non-believers that my house is for the most part NOT clean!  (I was working on an upholstery project, photos soon!)

I decided to put Sloan’s coat in my office on my mannequin.  Everytime I look at it I’m reminded of Sloan and I’m sure everytime she sees it she remembers her first dance!

Have a great weekend!!

  1. Fun times! And a great idea you have with the fur wrap. And you’ll probably use it more in the future. I kept all kinds of stuff to be used for dress-up days for my girls in high school. Have a great weekend!

  2. Your daughter is precious.

  3. Awww! Love it! Yep, Ya Ya is the best. That’s the kind of grandma I want to be!

  4. Your daughter looks absolutely beautiful! I have used a small mannequin for years now in my hallway with my older daughters baptismal gown. I loved the outfit the minute I saw it and knew I couldn’t hide it away in a box somewhere after she wore it. I walk past it a million times a day and I smile every time I see it. She is nine now and I miss her being a baby!
