Coffee Table and a Tray Makeover

I recently did a posting on a coffee table I was thinking about getting.  Well I got it and I updated it just a bit.

Here’s the before.

(I know it’s pretty gold isn’t it!)  Besides it being gold I really liked it for a few reasons, it’s different then what anyone else has but it also looks like something that would be sitting in Anthropologie and used as a display area for candles and jewelry and of course I loved the big hunkin’ slab of marble on top.

All I had to do was spray the gold an antique bronze.  Then after that easy fix was done the fun part of the project came, deciding how to dress the coffee table.  I almost follow a recipe when it comes to dressing my coffee table and it includes using things I love.  The first is design books they are a must, I’m an avid reader and I put books everywhere for that reason.  The second are candles, candles, candles, and I use lots of different sizes, high, medium and low, it makes the eye travel up and down.  The third is a silver piece filled with walnuts, I always put out walnuts in the winter time.  They remind me of my grandpa.  He always had a bowl of them next to his chair and as a little girl I was mesmerized by how he’d be able to crack them open for us!  (Funny the things you remember as a little kid!)  The last thing is a tray.  I’m a tray obsessed girl, I’ve got them everywhere.

Don’t you think the coffee table will look great with this console I plan on putting behind the sofa?

(Don’t mind the carpet or the unfinished fireplace, remember work in progress…)

I’ve been wanting to do a silver leaf project to use in my house for awhile.  I did a silver leaf table awhile back for a client and loved the results but wasn’t sure I was up for investing all that time in doing a whole table once again, so I did a tray.

The tray originally started out white.

It was then painted black.

Then the silver leaf process was done.  This includes applying a glue, then silver leaf and then sealer.

(How cute is that bowl?)

My husband laughs at me because it literally took me a week to finish my coffee table when most people just throw some magazines and a candle on their table and call it a day but to me it’s the small things like deciding what to put on a coffee table or side table is what I love to do the most.  I think design is in the details!

If you like to see more coffee tables and how they are decked out Casa Sugar did a fun article on it today.

  1. Oh lovely.. I like what you’ve done to that tray!! awesome!

  2. The picture of your after table looks like you clipped it right out of one of your books. Who’s to say “they” won’t use it in a book? Really, a work of art!!!!

  3. Your table turned out fantastic – the marble top is magnificent! I love the silver lining
in the tray – all of the elements make this a very elegant, yet comforting table.

  11. Hi Laurie. Love your table “turn out” Not necessarily a fan of the gold, so bravo and I love trays. I don’t know why and I too like to silver leaf. My husband enjoys my searches and paints and “to dos” more than he lets on — he says my creativity adds to our life. I like your display items because you first thought of yourself before you thought what would look good — your favorite books, you love candles, etc. — Blessings Terri http://www.morningdewdrops.typepad.com

  13. I so agree – design is in the details. It takes me a lot more time to accessorize than to do the entire space plan!

Love the table – what a transformation. It’s amazing how the bronze completely changed the look!

Would love for you to drop by and link up to Passion for Paint this weekend.
