Tackling the Tween Bedroom
October 5, 2010 at 1:57 am | Posted in tween bedroom | 43 CommentsTags: edesign, girls bedroom, moodboard, tween bedroom
I’ve mentioned this before but designing my 12 year old daughter’s room was probably my toughest design challenge to date. In case you didn’t know a 12 year old girl has a mind of her own and is very specific and particular about what she likes and especially what she doesn’t like.
Sloan had many requests she wanted a very colorful room without it looking too “kiddish” (her word) and she also wanted it to look bohemian. She wanted an area for her friends to hang out in, an area she could display her snowglobes, guitar and artwork, a place to study and an area for her television (huge movie fan), books (huge Twilight fan) and music (huge anything I don’t like fan!)
We live in a newly constructed house so needless to say there wasn’t much character to the room, it was basically a box.
I took her shopping and she fell in love with a bed in a bag from Target so I went from there. Here is what I came up with.
The wall paint is Benjamin Moore’s Angelina’s, the ceiling paint is Benjamin Moore’s Orleans Violet. The other items in her room came from places like Target, Walmart, Ikea and Home Goods. If you would like specifics please email or leave me a comment and I will answer you!.
I finally finished her room a few weeks ago and here’s what it looks like now!
A place to study and show off those snowglobes – Check!
Notice the large S on the wall, it’s actually a chalkboard that she and her friends use to draw on.
Television watching, guitar playing and book reading – Check! (She has a very large closet so she actually has a large bookcase in her closet full of books also.)
A fun close up. (Notice the tween essentials!)
So there you have it a tween room complete and a 12 year old happy, that is for now!!

Lovely transformation, what did you use to decorate the drawers?
Comment by Ijang— October 6, 2010 #
It’s a malm dresser from Ikea, I primed the front and painted it, then make a handmade stencil to mimic the mirror over the bed and just painted it! Thanks!

You did an amazing job of making that character-lacking box of a bedroom in to a fun, colorful place for a young girl. She must love it!
